  • Melrose Park man identified as Pistakee Lake drowning victim Jun 9, 2014 2:57 PM
    A 49-year-old man from Melrose Park was identified as the swimmer who died Sunday in Pistakee Lake near Johnsburg, authorities said. McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said William L. Trybula drowned about 3:30 p.m. in unincorporated McHenry County.

     
  • Melrose Park man gets 25 years in Lombard armed robbery May 30, 2014 1:01 AM
    A 20-year-old Melrose Park man was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for a 2012 armed robbery that netted him and two others a total of $600. Hector Dominguez, of the 1600 block of 24th Avenue, pleaded guilty last month in DuPage County to one count of armed robbery with a firearm.

     
  • Loss of state funding hampers new DuPage school Mar 26, 2014 5:56 PM
    Less than two years after moving into space at DuPage County’s former youth home, a nonprofit school that helps young people with severe behavioral, emotional and learning disorders is struggling to increase its enrollment. As a result, county officials have decided not to charge Joseph Academy rent through the end of September. They also have forgiven missed rent payments of about $12,000 a month dating back to November.

    When the girls basketball game between Hersey and Elk Grove began Wednesday night, Juliette Vainisi was not on the floor. By game’s end, she’d lit up the gym. The 5-foot-7 junior guard came off the bench to toss home a career-high 18 points and tie a school record that had stood since 2004 (with 10 steals) as the Huskies rallied past the Grenadiers 55-43 at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    Prospect’s girls basketball team was not all that thrilled with its play on Saturday at the 24th annual McDonald’s Shootout in Villa Park. “That loss to Wheaton Warrenville South (61-46) left kind of a sour taste,” said Knights coach Ashley Graham. So the taste of victory felt good on Tuesday in Glenview. Junior Taylor Will scored a game-high 18 points and classmate Catherine Sherwood added 16 as Prospect (17-4) topped host Glenbrook South 40-38 in the nonconference girls basketball game.

    Leyden senior Erika Pimentel suddenly noticed that a lot more people were paying attention. Despite her teammates’ efforts to distract her, it seemed everyone at Brunswick Zone at Mount Prospect realized that that Pimentel had rolled nine strikes in a row and was going into the 10th frame with the possibility of a perfect game at the Prospect Invitational. And when she rolled a strike to begin the 10th, the excitement and pressure became even more pronounced. “I was shaking at that point,” said the senior. “My dad was there watching, and I’m sure even he was nervous. My teammates were trying to calm me down.” Pimentel rolled her next ball and, unfortunately, left the 4 pin standing. She still finished with an examplary 289 game, the best by far as the Prospect invite Saturday.

    One day after making only 2 of 11 free throws in a loss to Lake Park, it was accuracy at the charity stripe that helped Addison Trail’s girls basketball team earn its first win in the West Suburban Gold. The Blazers’ game-ending 11-0 run in the final 5:48 consisted of 11 of 14 free throws which secured a 51-39 victory over visiting Leyden on Saturday afternoon.

     
  • Wheeling wins Warren tourney; Fremd 5th at Montini Dec 29, 2013 1:23 AM
    With junior guard Hailey Dammeier scoring a career-high 20 points in a 56-46 win over Deerfield on Saturday, Wheeling’s girls basketball team won the Warren tournament with a 4-1 record. Carmel also went 4-1 but the Wildcats defeated the Corsairs 45-42 in head-to-head competition of the six-team round robin event in Gurnee.

    Hersey coach Mary Fendley has guided the Huskies into their share of championship games at the Wheaton North Christmas Tournament.But never did they reach the final game the way they did Friday night. Trailing Lyons Township in the semifinal by 18 points with under 6:30 remaining, the Huskies rallied for a 65-60 overtime triumph.

    Maine West’s all-time leading scorer Brittany Collins showed why she has earned that milestone as the senior collected a game-high 32 points with 12 rebounds to help lead the Warriors to a 50-46 victory in the opening round of the 31st annual Dundee-Crown Charger Classic Girls Tournament. It was Collins’ fourth game of the season with 30 or more points and the Saint Xavier recruit has a double-double in early every game this season.

    Jessica Hohlweg said the game plan for St. Viator on Monday night was to get the ball inside. The Lions succeeded quite often and Hohlweg was often the beneficiary. The 5-foot-11 junior forward scored a career-high 15 points to help lead the Lions to a 47-38 triumph over Leyden in the first-round game of the 31st annual St. Viator Snowflake Girls Basketball Tournament in Arlington Heights.

     
  • St. Viator, Fremd headline holiday hoopla at Wheeling Dec 21, 2013 8:57 PM
    Many basketball fans will get an early start to their annual feast of Holiday basketball tournaments. Area teams competing at Jacobs, Elgin, Glenbard West and Wheeling will begin tournament play before Christmas, and all area teams will be in action after the holiday. Wheeling tips off its 36th annual Hardwood Classic on Monday with a full slate of games beginning at 9 a.m. It will culminate Saturday evening with the title game at 8:45 p.m.; St. Viator (9-1) and unbeaten Fremd (9-0) hope to earn spots in it.

    Over the many years Hersey’s girls basketball team has been playing in the Wheaton North Christmas tournament, the Huskies have gained a reputation for always finishing higher than their seed in the 16-team event.This season, the Huskies won’t have a chance to do that. But they would love to equal it. Coach Mary Fendley’s squad, boasting a 10-1 record, is the top seed at Wheaton North followed by Downers Grove North, Willowbrook and West Aurora.

    More than 100 members of East Leyden’s Key Club, National Honor Society, Pulse Club, Art Club and Italian Honor Society created holiday greeting cards to be distributed to children who are in hospitals during the holiday season.
