    Artificial turf will be installed at football fields at Glenbard South and East this summer, ready for the start of the new school year in August. Those are the two final schools to get new turf since Glenbard High School District 87 started a turf replacement program at Glenbard North in 2009, followed by Memorial Field at Glenbard West in 2010.

    In many years, Lilac Time in Lombard is a preview, celebrating the flowers and fragrance of more than 700 lilac bushes about to bloom. This year, it's an after-party. The lilacs started blooming in mid-March, the earliest Lombard Park District horticulturist Jerry Budd remembers seeing them. But the usual Lilac Time bevy of events is scheduled for May 5-20, including a lilac sale, quilt show, sculpture show and more.

    Glenbard East High School in Lombard will become the fourth and final school in District 87 to get artificial field turf on its campus. The school board voted 6-1 this week to put the estimated $1.3 million project out to bid, which follows a similar action in February to seek bids for a $1.5 million turf and track project at Glenbard South near Glen Ellyn.

    Watering baseball and soccer fields should be easier and cheaper for Lombard Park District after the village board this week approved the use of wells for irrigation of park properties. “It will give us the ability in the future to irrigate many of our athletic fields,” the park district's Executive Director Paul Friedrichs said.

But those engineering terms all boil down to a simpler idea of creating extra space for rain. “We’re trying to give Mother Nature a bigger bath tub for all that water to go into,” said Dave Gorman, Lombard’s assistant director of public works.

    With rain from last weekend soaked into the soil, and more wet weather in the forecast, Lombard residents living near Terrace View Pond wish efforts to increase the pond’s stormwater capacity would move along faster. “They’re using our yards and basements as retention ponds,” Lombard resident Linda Sullivan said. “We feel like the village owes us a functioning sewer system, a functioning infrastructure.”
