    The Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce named Tricia O’Brien as its new executive director — in addition to the winners of six awards — at its third annual Celebrations of Excellence dinner last Thursday night. O’Brien, a former employee of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce, succeeded the retiring Cheri Sisson on Monday.

    The Hoffman United Lady Hawks Soccer Team was named the Best of Hoffman by the Hoffman Estates Park District at its Board of Commissioners regular board meeting Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Triphahn Community Center and Ice Arena.

    A get-together for special needs citizens 14 and older is being held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.Friday, Dec. 6, at the Vogelei Barn Teen Center, 650 W. Higgins Road. Admission free. Pizza will be served for $2 a slice, but popcorn and lemonade are complimentary. December’s theme is “Holiday and Ugly Sweater Party.” Join us for food, fun and games!     The village of Hoffman Estates, in partnership with the Alexian Brothers Health System, has been awarded the 2013 Illinois Governor’s Hometown Award for its Alexian Brothers Fitness For America Sports Festival. The sports festival is a full weekend of inline skating and running events for all fitness levels.

    The Northern Illinois Raptor Center is seeking interns for its upcoming educational sessions. NIRC has new “mews” (homes) in Vogelei Park in Hoffman Estates, and will be placing birds there soon.

     
  • Friends of HE Parks hosting beer and wine tasting fundraiser Aug 28, 2013 7:54 PM
    The Friends of the Hoffman Estates Park District Foundation will host a beer and wine tasting event called Uncorked & Untapped from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, 1400 Poplar Creek Drive in Hoffman Estates. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

     
  • Arlington Hts. figure skater, 64, is cleaning up on the 'silver' circuit Aug 26, 2013 1:43 PM
    Mary Ellen Gabler of Arlington Heights didn't start figure skating until she was 41, but today she's a champion on the ice. She took first place in the Adult Silver division of the Chicago Open, and this December she will be a featured soloist at the Hoffman Estates Park District's winter ice show. “My original goal was to be able to skate backward,” Gabler says. “That fascinated me.”

     
  • Community invited to enter Scarecrow Contest Sep 10, 2013 12:36 PM
    The Hoffman Estates Park District is inviting the community to enter its sixth annual Scarecrow Contest. The scarecrows will be displayed for judging at the Scarecrow Festival from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Vogelei Park, 650 W. Higgins Road.

     
  • St. Alexius discontinues Golden Circle program Aug 15, 2013 6:27 PM
    After 24 years of providing social and wellness services to people ages 50 and older, the St. Alexius Medical Center Golden Circle program has been discontinued. Jon Rozenfeld, chief operating officer of Alexian Brothers Acute Care Ministries, mailed a letter to Golden Circle members last week that said the decision came about “after careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of existing community senior resources available to the public.”

    Officials from the city of Elgin and DuPage Forest Preserve District say transparency grades recently made public by a watchdog group reflect outdated numbers. “We're being held accountable, but no one's holding them accountable,” said Sue Olafson, a forest district spokeswoman.

The soulful singer and her band will take the stage 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25, as part of the “Summer Sounds on the Green” concert series.

     
  • Hoffman Estates Park District improves transparency on website Jul 16, 2013 12:57 PM
    The Hoffman Estates Park District has added a new link on its website sending users directly to a page dedicated to Freedom of Information Act and transparency information. Executive Director Dean Bostrom said the district created the link following a July 10 Daily Herald story regarding the transparency of suburban governments.

  • Friends of HE Parks Foundation names new chairman Jun 14, 2013 11:04 PM
    Troy Triphahn has been named chairman of the Friends of the HE Parks Foundation. Triphahn’s late father, Scott R. Triphahn, was a former Hoffman Estates Park District board commissioner who helped established the foundation in 1999. The younger Triphahn, who grew up playing sports through the park district, is the vice president and COO of W-T Engineering, Inc. and is actively involved in corporate softball and basketball leagues.

    Attendees at this year’s Hoffman Estates Parks Foundation golf outing will have a chance to golf with a retired professional athlete. The Scott R. Triphahn “Celebri-tee” event will take place on Wednesday, June 26, at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club.

     
  • Swedish hockey teams visiting Hoffman Estates for hockey tourney Apr 19, 2013 4:54 AM
    A group of close to 40 children from Sweden are getting a taste of American culture by staying with host families in Hoffman Estates and participating in a new hockey tournament this weekend. The Hoffman Estates Park District is hosting the Krolak Cup through Sunday. Two Swedish teams of 13- and 14-year-olds were getting a special welcome during the tournament's opening ceremony Thursday night at the Triphahn Community Center and Ice Arena.

     
  • Longtime Hoffman Estates park commissioner retires Apr 11, 2013 5:08 PM
    Hoffman Estates Park District Board Commissioner Lollie Guiney is stepping down this month after serving on the board for 16 years. The 82-year-old who's won numerous medals in the Senior Olympics plans to stay active and fit, however.
