Friends of HE Parks Foundation names new chairman Jun 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Troy Triphahn has been named chairman of the Friends of the HE Parks Foundation. Triphahn’s late father, Scott R. Triphahn, was a former Hoffman Estates Park District board commissioner who helped established the foundation in 1999. The younger Triphahn, who grew up playing sports through the park district, is the vice president and COO of W-T Engineering, Inc. and is actively involved in corporate softball and basketball leagues.

A group of close to 40 children from Sweden are getting a taste of American culture by staying with host families in Hoffman Estates and participating in a new hockey tournament this weekend. The Hoffman Estates Park District is hosting the Krolak Cup through Sunday. Two Swedish teams of 13- and 14-year-olds were getting a special welcome during the tournament's opening ceremony Thursday night at the Triphahn Community Center and Ice Arena.

Triphahn Center gym reopens in Hoffman Estates Apr 5, 2013 12:00 AM
After being closed for more than two months, the gym at the Triphahn Community Center in Hoffman Estates reopened Friday. The gym was shut down Jan. 25 after a heavy freeze caused hundreds of pock marks formed by a hailstorm last year to crack.

Hoffman Estates Park District names employee, team player, volunteer of the year Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The Hoffman Estates Park District recognized its 2012 employee of the year and team player of the year at a March 19 meeting. The recipients were Sally Whalen, a disbursement associate for the business department, and hockey coach Pete Ripoli. Hoffman Estates Community Bank President Georgeanna Mehr was named volunteer of the year in January.

Playgrounds undergoing renovations in Hoffman Estates Mar 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The Hoffman Estates Park District is close to finalizing bids for the installation of more than $117,000 worth of new playground equipment at Lincoln Park, High Point Park and Brittany Park. The existing playgrounds are more than a decade old and the only ones left in the district that are made out of wood. Work on the new playgrounds should be complete by early summer.

Friends of HE Parks Foundation hosting two fundraisers Jan 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Money will be raised for the Friends of HE Parks Foundation at two events next month. The Chicago Soul FC will donate $4 to the foundation from every ticket sold for their game against the Rochester Lancers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. The foundation is also hosting a Girl Friends Night Out fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at First Place Sports Bar, 1736 W. Algonquin Road in Hoffman Estates.

Suburban elections see rise in Muslim candidates Jan 6, 2013 12:00 AM
More Muslim candidates are running for elected office in the suburbs and a group called Project Mobilize is helping with training, networking, fundraising and resources to reach target demographics. "We wanted to be the vehicle to help those individuals gain leadership skills," group co-founder Reema Ahmad said. Running for office "gives friends and neighbors, and the public an opportunity to see American Muslims in the community in a light that they wouldn't otherwise be seen in from the media," said Junaid Afeef, who is running for Hoffman Estates Park Board.
