Glenview Greek Fest Returns Saturday & Sunday

The Glenview Greek Fest returns this summer to Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, with some new features added. The event takes place Saturday, July 21, and Sunday, July 22, from 1 to 11 p.m. each day, on the church grounds at 1401 Wagner Rd. (at Lake Ave.) in Glenview.

"Our Festival is back outside again this year and we've added carnival games and a bounce house for the kids, as well as Greek dance performances both nights. We've also extended the closing time a bit, so we can keep the fun going," said George Logothetis, Greek Fest chairman. "Our friends at Loyola Academy are allowing us to use their parking lot and we'll have shuttle buses to and from the Fest. There will be outdoor dining areas under two big tents and additional indoor seating near our Greek Pastries area in our air-conditioned community center. We look forward to welcoming our guests, rain or shine."

"Last year's Fest was a wonderful success, not only in terms of the fellowship among our parishioners as they worked together to host the event, but also in establishing our parish as a vibrant participant in the community and furthering a positive relationship with our Glenview neighbors," noted Rev. Fr. Panagiotis Boznos, proistamenos (pastor) of Saints Peter and Paul. "We hope to build on those successes. Once again, we will share a portion of proceeds with two amazing organizations: Youth Services of Glenview and Northbrook, which provides activities-based mental health care for area children and teens; and the International Orthodox Christian Charities, which provides humanitarian assistance and emergency relief around the world."

Traditional Greek food favorites - including pork souvlaki (shish kebab), Athenian chicken, gyros, grilled octopus, spanakopita (filo with spinach & feta filling) and tiropita (filo with cheese filling) - will be featured at the Fest. Greek wine and beer will also be sold. Sweet lovers can enjoy the popular loukoumades (warm, deep fried pastry puffs, topped with honey and cinnamon), as well as a variety of homemade pastries. For the kids, there are hot dogs and ice cream from local favorite Homer's Ice Cream.

Entertainment at the event includes performances by the Orpheus Greek Dance Troupe from 7:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. From 5 to 8 p.m. each evening, Lorelei the Clown will entertain the children with a magic show, face painting and balloon animal creations. There is also a bounce house for the kids and carnival games from 1 to 9 p.m. each day. DJ Spiro will play Greek music for dancing throughout the event, except during performances. Church tours are also scheduled each afternoon.

Free satellite parking, with shuttle bus service to/from the Fest, will be available at Loyola Academy (Lake and Laramie). Valet parking will be offered for a minimal fee in the church's north lot on Wagner Rd. For a full entertainment schedule or more information, visit ssppglenview.org or facebook.com/ssppglenview.
