Celebrating Centenarian: Aurora Methodists hold early 100th birthday celebration for member
Aurora resident William "Bill" Moore was honored at an early 100th birthday celebration Sunday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora.
Moore, who turns 100 Wednesday, Nov. 15, was recognized during a morning worship service by Rev. John Bell, Wesley UMC pastor. Moore will be honored at a second celebration at Piper's Banquets in Aurora Saturday, Nov. 18.
Moore, a former CPA and accountant, has been a Wesley UMC member for 71 years.
The senior member of the Aurora Kiwanis Club, he works out three times weekly and drives his own car. He has also written a book about his family history.
After graduating from college in 1938. Moore served in various accounting positions in government and private industry and four years as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
Moore came to Aurora in 1947 to work for a local CPA firm. After three years, he opened G. William Moore CPA. In 1977, he joined his firm with a CPA firm from Champaign, Sikich Accounting. It is the largest accounting firm in Illinois. He retired at age 94.
Joining Wesley UMC in 1947, he served two terms on the board of trustees, helped count collections after church services and worked on the annual every member pledge drive.
As church financial secretary for several years, Moore prepared a financial statement for monthly trustee meetings, Additionally, he served as an independent auditor for the Rock River Conference of the United Methodist Church for 20 years.
When not focusing on numbers, he was active in a Sunday school class for young adults.
