Literacy volunteers needed for adult learners

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley needs volunteers to help Fox Valley adults learn English. A four-session tutor training workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 12-21, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley helps adults improve their English by matching them with trained volunteer tutors one to one.

The program provides material and training so that anyone can be a tutor. You don't need a second language or a teaching background to qualify.

Once you are trained, you meet with your student for one hour each week. They arrange convenient, comfortable, and safe public locations for tutoring. Most tutors and students meet at local libraries. If you can spare one hour each week, they can fit tutoring into your schedule.

From week to week, you'll see your student get more comfortable and fluent in English and you will know you are making a big difference in their lives. You will get guidance and support when you need it and experienced tutors are glad to share what they have learned.

Residents who are interested in registering for tutor training should visit www.lvfv.org or call/text Peg Coker at (630) 584-4428.
