Join Gail Borden for picnic, touch-a-truck, Chinelo Fest

Touch-a-Truck and Family Picnic:

Kids will be able to climb on an Elgin fire engine, an Elgin police car, school bus, ambulance and more at this free, fun event at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the main library outdoor stage and library parking lot, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. Visitors can bring a picnic dinner to the library's west lawn at 6 p.m. A beverage and dessert will be provided by the library. Kids can climb on vehicles from 6:30 to 8 p.m. In case of inclement weather, families are invited to eat their picnic dinners on the floor in the community rooms beginning at 6 p.m.

Meet Anna and Elsa:

Preschoolers and their families are invited to visit Anna and Elsa from "Frozen," who will sing, dance and tell stories and be available for photo ops at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the main library's Meadows Community Rooms. Arrive early to receive your ticket for the photo op. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Chinelo Fest:

Traditional costumed dancers called "chinelos" from Morelos, Mexico will share their dance and art at two free programs at Gail Borden Library's Chinelo Fest on Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19.

Craft and dance workshops related to the chinelos will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in the main library's Meadows Community Rooms. The celebration will continue from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 19 when visitors will learn a fun and simple dance and be able to join a traditional chinelo procession starting at the main library's outdoor stage.

Chinelo Fest will feature the Amigos de la Cultura de Xochitepec organization from Morelos, Mexico, which will be sharing dance, art and other traditions. Chinelos are known for their colorful costumes with wooden masks with details reflecting prehispanic cultures, and hats with colorful feathers.
