12 years for Chicago man who robbed Schaumburg gas station
One of three Chicago residents charged with robbing gas stations in Schaumburg and Des Plaines and a doughnut shop in Glenview pleaded guilty Thursday to one of the robberies.
Ahmed Fathi, 27, pleaded guilty to the March 2017 armed robbery of a gas station on the 2500 block of North Meacham Road in Schaumburg. In exchange, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with credit for 532 days he has spent in custody.
Fathi, who has cases pending in Skokie, must pay $584 in fines, court records show.
According to prosecutors during last year's bond hearing, Fathi entered the Schaumburg gas station while his co-defendants, Ayham Alamawi, 23, and Samantha Perez, 23, waited in a car. Prosecutors said Fathi threatened the clerk and took $150.
Fathi, Alamawi and Perez are also accused of robbing a Glenview doughnut shop a short time later. During that robbery, prosecutors say, Fathi used a knife to open the cash register and remove money. He then fled with the others, according to authorities.
The clerk called 911 and a description of the defendants went to other police departments, prosecutors said. Niles police stopped the trio soon after on a traffic violation, prosecutors said.
Fathi, Perez and Alamawi are also charged with robbing a Des Plaines gas station the same week. Police said Fathi and Perez entered the gas station on the 1200 block of Lee Street in Des Plaines. Fathi is accused of putting a knife to the clerk's throat and taking money from the register. The couple fled in a car driven by Alamawi, police said.
Fathi and Perez appear in a Skokie courtroom Friday.
