Friends for Downers Grove Township Seniors Help Make Dial-A-Ride more Affordable

If you think about all of the things that you need to do on a daily basis, so much of what is on our list requires us to get somewhere. Whether it's driving the kids to school, getting to the grocery store, or picking up a prescription from the pharmacy, we all have places to go. For us here in Downers Grove Township and DuPage County, that means we get into our car and drive. But, what would you do if you couldn't drive? For some of the older residents in our communities, they are no longer able to drive. That is why Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens was pleased to help make transportation a bit more affordable for those residents within the Township.

The Downers Grove Township Board received a check for $5,000.00 from Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens at their November 17, 2016 board meeting. This will allow the Township to reduce the Dial-A-Ride fare from $4.00 to $3.00 for a one-way ride.

Dial-A-Ride is a transportation program that is a collaboration between the Township and PACE that provides rides for senior citizens and those with disabilities. Registered riders utilize the service to get to a variety of daily activities such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, social events and work.

The hope is that with a reduced cost of getting places, those residents will no longer have to make difficult choices between buying enough groceries and refilling a prescription over getting themselves to a medical appointment or just out to socialize with others. Every dollar counts and we want them to add up and contribute to an enjoyable quality of life for these residents.
