Police investigating cause of fatal Algonquin crash

Algonquin police said Monday they are still piecing together the events leading up to a five-vehicle crash that killed one motorcyclist and injured three others last weekend.

Three motorcycles were traveling north on the Route 31 western bypass about 5:39 p.m. Saturday when they hit a raised median just north of Route 62, entered the southbound lanes and collided with two oncoming vehicles, according to an Algonquin news release.

But what caused the motorcycles to strike the median in the first place remains under investigation, Deputy Chief Jeff Sutrick said.

"It's a very large and complex crash scene," Sutrick said. "There's a lot of information we have to go over to reconstruct the crash."

One motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson driven by 35-year-old Alex J. Misurelli, was hit by a Honda Accord after crossing the median, officials said. Misurelli, a Crystal Lake resident, was pronounced dead at the scene about 6:02 p.m.

The 25-year-old Palatine man driving the Honda was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, police said.

A Lake in the Hills man, 40, also driving a Harley-Davidson, and a 34-year-old Woodstock man driving a Yamaha were both ejected from their motorcycles when they hit the median, police said. They were taken to local hospitals before the Lake in the Hills man was flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

A Nissan Armada, whose 16-year-old driver from Crystal Lake was uninjured, hit the second Harley-Davidson after its driver was ejected, police said.

Sutrick said Monday the three people injured are still alive, but their conditions and injuries are unknown. None of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets, he said.

The bypass was closed for several hours after the crash so police could investigate the scene, which extended the length of two football fields. No citations have been issued so far.

Algonquin police and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team continue to investigate.
