Woodland Intermediate Places 1st for Attendance Among Lake County's Large Elementary Schools

Woodland Intermediate School placed first in a group of 10 large schools in Lake County recognized for attendance during the 28th Annual Attendance Week Competition for elementary schools sponsored by the Attendance and Truancy Division of the Lake County Regional Office of Education.

With 1,271 fourth and fifth graders enrolled, Woodland Intermediate School in Gurnee, also had the largest number of students among the 10 large schools. Woodland Intermediate has placed in the top 10 for eight of the last 10 years of the competition held during the first full week of school after the Labor Day holiday.

"We are honored by the recognition. Intermediate is a warm, welcoming environment where students want to be and we want them to be there because when they are there, they are learning," said Intermediate Principal Mike Witkowski. He added that staff monitors attendance rigorously and if there are five absences, the lack of attendance is addressed with the family.

Other schools invited to a recognition of the top 10 large elementary schools with high attendance for the week were Round Lake Middle School and John T. Magee Middle School, both in Round Lake District 116; Robert Crown School in Wauconda District 118; Highland Middle School in Libertyville District 70; Park Campus in Grayslake District 46; Hawthorn Elementary South in Hawthorn District 73; both Fremont Elementary and Fremont Intermediate in Fremont District 79; and Abbott Middle School in Waukegan District 60.
