Explore world of Shakespeare's gardens Friday

The Elgin Garden Club and Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin will jointly present a program, "Shakespeare in the Garden" by Laura Mueller, lecturer from the Art Institute of Chicago.

The program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in the library's Meadows Room, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

There is no charge for the program but registration is requested by calling the library at (847) 429-4597 or online at gailborden.info/register.

The Elgin Garden Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and Mueller will feature information about the Shakespeare gardens of 1916 as well as paintings and plants popular in Shakespeare's time and beyond.

Mueller will consider why a well-tended garden became one of Shakespeare's prime metaphors.

The Art Institute has sent Mueller to lead museum trips to Belgium, Italy, northern France and the prehistoric case of southern Europe.
