Four Drunk Drivers Arrested During Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Labor Day Campaign

West Chicago, Illinois: September 14, 2015 - From August 24 - September 7, 2015, drivers on West Chicago roadways may have noticed an increase in police activity due to the West Chicago Police Department's participation in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunk driving enforcement campaign. Zero tolerance was shown for impaired driving, and officers arrested 4 offenders for driving while impaired. In addition, 25 seat belt citations were issued. The local effort was part of a partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

"The way we see it, if we saved one life, the campaign was worthwhile," said Commander Stephen Laub.

The high-visibility Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign aimed to increase awareness about the dangers of drunk and drugged driving through the strict, no-nonsense enforcement of drunk driving laws. According to Commander Laub, anyone caught driving drunk was arrested. The West Chicago Police Department didn't show any mercy or accept any excuses. Another equally important part of the crackdown were public service announcements on TV, radio and social media. "It was hard to avoid the message," he said.

Commander Laub shared that planning ahead is the key to preventing drunk driving. "This year, we really pushed the message about designating a sober driver. If everyone planned ahead, we'd have a lot fewer fatalities on our hands."

The crackdown was coordinated by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.
