Door County Fish Boil fundraiser in Barrington

Bring the whole family to enjoy a Door County "Fish Boil" in Citizens Park, Jewel Tea Pavilion, 511 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington, from 4-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4. Families will enjoy free popcorn, cotton candy, and balloons. The Johnny Gray Show will provide special entertainment at 5:30 p.m.

The Barrington Area Council on Aging, Barrington Park District, and Lake Barrington Woods will host the first Door County Fish and BBQ Chicken Feast here in Barrington. Fitzgerald's of Genoa City, Wisconsin, will prepare this feast with their traditional outdoor kettle technique.

The Door County Tradition of a "Fish Boil" lives on with the Fitzgerald family. They serve all-you-can-eat North Atlantic cod boiled in traditional outdoor kettles for a delicious meal. Unlike other fish boils that use trout or whitefish, the Fitzgerald's use cod that is completely free of skin and bones. Served with drawn butter, the sweet taste of the boiled cod is very close to that of lobster

It starts with boiling fresh potatoes and whole onions, outdoors over a wood fire. Then these master chefs add in fresh cod to each batch; as they stir the boiling kettles, they keep adding wood to the fire, and simultaneously grill their famous barbecue chicken. Their honey barbecue sauce is a well-kept, family secret, passed down through generations with a sweet, whiskey base.

We will know it is time to eat when the kettle erupts into a fiery spectacle known as the "boil over." Dinner includes boneless North Atlantic cod served with sweet drawn butter, boiled red potatoes and onions, coleslaw, barbecue chicken served with Fitzgerald's own secret sauce, and fresh salted rye bread. A frosted apple square tops off the meal.

Cost of the evening will be $25 for adults and $12.50 for children. Reservations are required by Aug. 25. To make your reservations, call the Barrington Park District at (847) 381-0687.
