N. Barrington Montessori students learn about nature

On June 24, the children of Montessori Children's House of North Barrington explored some habitats of Illinois, with the help of Citizens for Conservation.

Four summer interns and Gail Vanderpoel, CFC's youth education leader, presented information on habitats at four stations around the school's lovely yard. Examples of animals and plants found in wetlands, prairies, woodlands and underground were presented.

The children answered riddles, splashed in water, used binoculars and bug viewers, dressed up like prairie plants and butterflies, and dug in the dirt to find underground creatures. Closing activities included making a mini-habitat terrarium, playing a habitat matching game and singing "Old McDonald Had a Habitat."

Citizens for Conservation presents lessons and programs for Montessori Children's House of North Barrington at various times throughout the year. The children spend a lot of time outdoors and the school has numerous awards and nature classroom designations for their encouragement of nature-based learning. CFC appreciates its partnership and the opportunity to work with these enthusiastic young learners and the school's very helpful staff.
