Waukegan man admits using hammer to beat dogs

A Waukegan man admitted under oath yesterday to beating several pit bulls at his home with a hammer and wooden sticks, but insisted it was necessary to get them to stop fighting. In Lake County circuit court, Juan Rositas, 49, denied ever hitting a dog hard enough to kill, but said he would use hammers or sticks from a wood pile to frighten them. Full story.

More charges against former St. Charles North employee

Additional charges have been filed against a former St. Charles North High School dean's assistant who is accused of having sex with a student, according to court records. Christopher A. Lee, 29, of Chicago has been indicted on charges he sent obscene pictures to the female victim using social media. A Kane County grand jury added the two misdemeanor charges last week against Lee, who was arrested in May and is free on bond. Full story.

Lake in the Hills trustee will resign, cites lack of diversity

Lake in the Hills village Trustee Denise Barreto cited a lack of diversity in McHenry County in deciding to step down after six years on the village board. “McHenry County is a tough place to be, if you are different,” said Barreto, 43. “As my kids have gotten older, they want to be in a place where they see people that look like them in leadership and in school.” Barreto will give up her trustee seat at the end of July. Schaumburg special events, drones might not mix

Driven by concerns about public safety, Schaumburg trustees are poised to enact a ban today on the use of drones within 100 feet of public property during special events. Among the prohibited venues would be the village's municipal grounds during the Septemberfest event over Labor Day weekend and Boomers Stadium when a baseball game, concert or the American Cancer Society's annual Relay For Life is happening there. Boomers Stadium is public property because it's co-owned by the village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Park District. Full story.

Arlington Heights cops still probing murder-suicide

Arlington Heights police say they're still working to determine the circumstances that led a Carol Stream man to fatally stab his girlfriend in a motel room last week before killing himself. Police said Luis Antonio Nonato Velasquez, 32, checked into the Motel 6 at 441 W. Algonquin Road with Cecilia Perez, 41, of Aurora, last Wednesday, July 8. The couple was found dead about 1 p.m. Thursday, July 9. . Full story.

Suburban Chicago's Got Talent finalists selected

With the tallies the judge and fans computed, 15 musical acts have been selected to move on this week in Suburban Chicago's Got Talent. “I was just blown away by the level of talent we had this year,” said Ron Onesti, president and CEO of Onesti Entertainment and a returning Suburban Chicago's Got Talent judge. “It's a very stiff competition by all involved.” Full story.

White Sox star pitcher Chris Sale will be on the mound at some point in tonight's All-Star Game, said American League manager Ned Yost, who skippers the Kansas City Royals. Sox manager Robin Ventura had said Saturday that he “would prefer” if Sale didn't pitch in the game. However, Yost said on ESPN's “Mike & Mike” radio show that he spoke with Ventura: “I'm going to pitch him; I've talked to Robin.” Full story.
