According to numerous sources, 2014 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year California Chrome is out of this summer's Arlington Million race at Arlington International Racecourse. The Daily Racing Form reported yesterday that trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome is unlikely to race again in 2015 after being diagnosed with a bruised cannon bone. Full story.

Officials say all 54 stingrays in a popular exhibit at Brookfield Zoo died because the oxygen levels in their tank dropped too low. Full story.

Aurora police shoot at armed men, no one hit

An Aurora police officer fired on two suspects who authorities say pointed handguns at the officer and a partner Saturday night. No one was injured in the officer-involved shooting, which occurred about 7:20 p.m. Saturday and ended with four people in custody. Full story.

Fox Lake food, drink tax giving businesses indigestion

Fox Lake officials estimate the village stands to lose $500,000 to $800,000 in state revenue when legislators finally figure out a solution to the state budget crisis. So, rather than waiting to cut budgets, personnel and programs to make ends meet, village officials decided in April to recoup some of the losses with a 1.5-percent "places for eating" tax on food and drinks served in local restaurants and taverns. Summer school grows in popularity at Elgin Community College

Elgin Community College is seeing a steady increase in its summer school population. Officials say the reasons for the increase are varied, ranging from students who attend four-year schools trying to get a head start on the fall semester or playing catch up with work needed for their degree, to people switching careers using the college's summer offerings to gain certifications, primarily in the health care field. Man injured in rollover crash in Itasca

One man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on a ramp in Itasca yesterday, police said. An SUV rolled over on the ramp from westbound I-290 to Thorndale Avenue at 3:17 p.m., said Master Sgt. Amy Pelletier, of the Illinois State Police. The ramp was shut down after the accident. Probation for two in Carpentersville party fight

A pair of Carpentersville men were sentenced to a year of probation each after pleading guilty to charges alleging they jumped another man outside a party in July 2014. Daniel Mora, 24, and Jose A. Mora-Aguilar, 27, both of the 200 block of Enesenda Circle, admitted to aggravated battery, a felony, just before their bench trial before Judge John Barsanti was about to begin last week, according to Kane County court records.
