Youngsters learn about nature at Barrington camp

From Monday, June 8-Friday, June 12, Citizens for Conservation Youth Education Committee presented a Beginning Naturalists Camp for 4- and 5-year-olds to learn about nature. The camp was at CFC's headquarters at Flint Creek Savanna in Barrington. Topics for discovery included plants, insects, birds, water and mammals.

Each day the children walked the trails observing different aspects of the environment. Other activities included building homes for painted lady butterfly caterpillars, making animal footprints in clay, making fish prints, hearing stories on daily topics, and decorating wren houses to take home.

Students also planted milkweed seeds in pots and found mammal bones on a scavenger hunt. CFC was lucky to have experienced birder and teacher, Wendy Paulson led our bird class.

Citizens for Conservation hopes to expand our nature camp next year to include a wider age range. The excitement and enthusiasm of these young scientists was obvious, as they pointed out specific bugs, birds and plants to their parents.
