Elgin arsonist headed back to prison for gun burglary

A 24-year-old man who served prison time for a 2009 Elgin arson is headed back to prison after pleading guilty to an East Dundee burglary.

Salvatore D. Riso, formerly of East Dundee and now of Chicago, was sentenced to four more years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to the May 2014 crime, according to Kane County court records. He could have received up to 15 years in prison for stealing three .22 caliber guns and $12 from a home on the 500 block of Wendt Avenue, according to court records.

Judge John Barsanti accepted the plea; under state law, Riso can have his sentence cut in half for good behavior behind bars.

Riso was released from prison in February 2014 after serving about half a 10-year prison term for setting fire to a two-story home on the 500 block of Ashland Avenue on Elgin's west side.

Riso torched the home two days after police were called there to break up a fight in which Riso, who was 19 at the time, was involved.

The fire consumed the home, spreading to the basement and attic; no one was injured and authorities rescued five pets.

Riso didn't act alone.

Anthony M. Huff, and Jessica A. Fliginger, both 18 at the time and from Carpentersville, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to eight years in prison and two years probation, respectively, records show.
