Nominations sought for landscape improvement project for vets or active military

As part of its efforts to provide community service, both the Elgin Breakfast and Noon Rotary clubs are seeking nominations for a veteran or active duty military family in Elgin who could benefit from landscape improvements.

According to Kimm Dodaro, current Elgin Breakfast Rotary Club president, the improvements will be performed by the Elgin Breakfast and Noon Rotary clubs.

Nominations can be emailed to Alan Kirk at akirk@resultsmc.com and should include the contact information for the nominee, nominator, and an explanation for why this person would benefit from this project. The deadline to nominate is Wednesday, July 1.

The Elgin Breakfast Rotary Club is continuing to commemorate its 25th anniversary by funding the 25-year-long scholarship program called "Business 25."

"The fund has been well received and will provide an annual educational scholarship to needy individuals wishing to pursue a vocational education," said Jennifer Alberts, club secretary and YMCA staff member. "Each company makes a one-time $1,000 donation but gets to see that donation benefit local residents for the next 25 years."

According to Marie Markel, club activity director, the fund has already secured 16 of the 25 needed businesses, which include Biggers Chevrolet, Lauderdale Electric, Lamp Inc., Otto Engineering, Alexander's Restaurant, Triumph Community Bank, Elgin Public House, Mueller, Winters Family Practice, Joe Bero & Son Plumbing, Burgess Commercial Real Estate, Alright Concrete Inc., and Humboldt Inc.

According to Markel, one of most recent supporters is Steve Riggio and Keith Boron, owners of Riggio/Boron Ltd., an exterior restoration firm in Elgin. Contributing to the Business 25 Initiative, Riggo stated, "I believe that we should support the education of those who wish to be educated and do not have the funds to make that happen."

Dave Dorgan, incoming president, also noted that the Elgin Breakfast club is seeking support of the annual Ray Kriske Memorial Hogg Roast, set for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin. The dinner will feature the hog roast, hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and more. An installation of officers will be at 6:30 p.m.

Reverse raffle tickets are $100. The grand prize is $2,000, with $5,000 in cash prizes.

Dinner tickets are $35, which includes an open bar. Cost for those under age 21 is $15 or free for those age 5 and under. Ticket deadline is Monday, July 6.

"Proceeds will go to support the good works of our club," Dorgan added.

The Elgin Breakfast Rotary meets at 7:15 a.m. Thursday at the Elgin Public House, 219 E. Chicago St. in downtown Elgin. Visitors are welcome to drop in without reservations.
