Montessori Children's House celebrates Earth Day

Citizens for Conservation Youth Education, along with Tom Crosh, CFC president, joined Montessori Children's House of North Barrington at its Earth Day Celebration.

The event ran from 4-6 p.m., and started with a special pizza appetizer which the children had prepared. The children also sang a special song for Earth Day. Parents joined their children in the celebration.

The school announced it had received certification from the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation program designating Montessori Children's House as a Nature Explore Classroom. The school for children, ages birth-6, is proud of its involvement in helping kids to learn about nature and enjoy being outdoors.

CFC presented three activities for the schoolchildren. Bonnie Albrecht helped with Earth art, coffee filters colored blue and green to look like planet earth in space. Tom Crosh demonstrated how to plant milkweed seeds, and each child planted some seeds to grow and donate to CFC. CFC had some milkweed stalks with dried pods of fluffy seeds so that the children could see where the seeds come from.

Gail Vanderpoel read a Native American story called "Brother Eagle, Sister Sky," and led the children in a song about all the living things on Earth. Children enjoyed moving like various animals, howling like coyotes and making their arms look like tree branches.

In keeping with the Earth Day tradition, all activities were held outside. It was a great celebration, and the children showed their love of nature despite the cold winds and unseasonably cold temperatures.
