Sheriff: Minn. man caught with nearly $9,000 in meth near Elgin
A 23-year-old Minnesota man was held on $350,000 bail Thursday after an arrest on I-90 near Elgin, where authorities say he was caught with nearly $9,000 of crystal meth.
Ismael Jaimes-Meza, of St. Paul, faces felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver and misdemeanor marijuana possession, according to Kane County court records.
Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said Jaimes-Meza was pulled over about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at I-90 and Randall Road near Elgin and the deputy began a search after smelling marijuana smoke coming from the vehicle.
Gengler said authorities found and seized 89 grams of crystal meth, which has an estimated street value of $8,900, along with 10 grams of marijuana.
"We don't see a lot of meth in this area, but it is here," Gengler said.
Jaimes-Meza is next due in court on April 30.
Thursday, his bail was set at $350,000, meaning he must post $35,000 to be released from the Kane County jail while the charges are pending.
Prosecutors also have filed court papers requiring Jaimes-Meza to prove his bond money comes from legitimate sources, according to court records.
If convicted, Jaime-Meza faces between six and 30 years in prison; probation is not an option.
