New! History Book Club at the Prospect Heights Public Library

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of the most secretive countries in the world, or what the Nazi world was really like, or why terrorism is such an effective weapon in today's world? These issues and more will be the focus of the new History Book Club at the Prospect Heights Public Library beginning in February, 2015. Participants in the book club will be able to read and discuss nonfiction on issues that dominate the current political and social landscape of the world. The club will meet on the second Wednesday of every other month at 7:30PM. At the first meeting on Wednesday, February 11th we will discuss Nothing to Envy : Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Demick, Barbara; a haunting portrait of life in North Korea. The book is already available at the Circulation Desk of the Prospect Heights Public library (www.phpl.info). For Wednesday, April 8th, we will read The Nazis : a Warning from History by Rees, Laurence. This work tells the gripping story of the rise and fall of the Third Reich. During a 16-year period, Laurence Rees interviewed a large number of former Nazis, and his unique insights into the Nazi psyche and World War II received enormous praise. Future meetings will be devoted to Mark Juergensmeyer's groundbreaking work on contemporary terrorism, Barbara Tuchman's classis study of World War I, and more. All of these works are essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand better the complex issues that shape our modern world. For more information and a full list of readings contact the Information Desk of the Prospect Heights Public library at 847-359-3500. The Library is located at 12 North Elm Street in Prospect Heights.
