Mental illness group offers class for friends and family

The National Alliance on Mental Illiness-Kane County North will sponsor the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program specifically for families, caregivers and friends of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness.

The 12 sessions start in Elgin on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and ends on May 2. The classes will take place at Elgin Bible Church, 1580 E Chicago St.

This free course will cover information about schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and self-care around worry and stress.

The course will be taught by NAMI Kane County North family member volunteers who have taken intensive training as course instructors.

Family-to Family is an evidenced-based course offered at no cost. However, class size is limited to 20, so registration is required.
