Park Renovation Gets the Green Light with Grant Funding

On January 3rd, the Des Plaines Park District was awarded a $251,000 grant from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Program (OSLAD) to be used for the renovation of Apache Park, located at 2100 Pine Street in Des Plaines. Governor Quinn, State Senator Dan Kotowski, and State Representative Marty Moylan were instrumental in securing the grant funding for this renovation.

The $251,000 grant, combined with $151,000 from the Des Plaines Park District and $100,000 in HUD funding from the City of Des Plaines, will meet the projected cost of the Apache Park Renovation Project which has been budgeted at $502,000.

The Park District and the City of Des Plaines worked together with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning beginning in early 2014, and presented the final site development rendering for the project in mid-October. "The partnership between the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, City of Des Plaines, and the Des Plaines Park District has produced an outstanding plan that will provide additional recreational opportunities to improve the quality of life for so many in this low income area of Des Plaines," said Senator Kotowski.

"We are very pleased with how this project has come together", said Des Plaines Park District Executive Director, Don Miletic, "and we look forward to building an outstanding recreational area for the Apache Park neighborhood.

The renovated park will be equipped with many exciting features including: a walking/jogging path, a picnic shelter, a splash pad, and a youth soccer field, to complement the playground that was built in 2012. The renovation is scheduled to begin in fall of 2015, with completion and opening scheduled for the spring of 2016. ‪"High quality parks are one of Des Plaines' greatest assets," said Representative Moylan. "In addition to providing a sense of community and a location for recreational activities, parks improve property values and make Des Plaines a more desirable place to live."
