Mitchell Museum of the American Indian Hosts Urban Pow Wow Presentation During Fall Community Day Oct. 25

On Saturday October 25 the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will host Community Day from 10am-5pm. Free activities include kid's crafts, food and light refreshments. The American Indian Center will present an Urban Pow Wow history and dance program (for an additional fee) beginning at 2:30. The museum's volunteers and staff will be on hand to provide information about volunteering, docenting, flute group, and other ways community members can be a part of the museum.

Mitchell Museum volunteers will lead children and their families in a Dreamcatcher craft from 11am-noon. The Dreamcatcher is originally an Ojibwe craft, intended to filter bad dreams, leaving only the good. The craft will be followed by food and light refreshments (noon-1pm).

From 2:30-3:30 pm, Cyndee Fox-Starr (Omaha/Odawa) and Louis Delgado (Oneida) from the American Indian Center of Chicago will show "50 years of Pow Wow" featuring clips from the 1950s, 1970s and last year's 60th anniversary. They will lead a discussion on how Urban Pow Wows differ from Tribal Pow Wows, and how they have changed over the last century. Fox-Starr and Delgado will also demonstrate popular Pow Wow dance steps and discuss their symbolism. Cost is $10 Members/ $12 non-Members.
