Hispanic Heritage Month at Gail Borden to feature Books That Live Project Oct. 12

Gail Borden Public Library will host the fifth annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Entertainment at the free festival will include "One-Man Mariachi" Miguel Nuno, the Chicago group Dezafinado 7, a bilingual children's concert by Tricia Sebastian, Ballet Girasol, an Elgin Area School District U-46 mariachi band, Grupo Luz del Ande, and Chinelos.

The debut of "Books That Live," a new storytelling experience, will take place at the festival from 2 to 4 p.m.

Books and authors featured will include:

• "Reinventing Myself: From Pumping Gas to Building Cities" by Omar Santos

• "Two Cultures, Two Languages" by Betty Martínez

• "The Kitchen, Heart of my Home" by Helen Strom

• "Illinois' First Latina State Trooper" by JoAnn Armenta

• "Just Me ... why I've enjoyed anticipating the unexpected" by Richard Rodríguez, Sr.

• "An Undocumented American" by Nayeli Manzano

• "Holidays, Baptisms, Birthdays, Oh My" by David Im

• "There is Hope" by Anthony Siete

• "The New Generation of the Elgin Domino Club" by Victor Pérez, Alfredo García, Carmelo Villanueva, José Villanueva, Edwin Vega and Alfredo García Jr.

This year's festival theme is "Sueños & Stories" or "Dreams & Stories."

Six successful area residents are featured on film, talking about their stories and dreams. They are Pita Betancourt, Kevin Echevarria, Elisa Lara, Paloma Greer, Margarita Mendoza and Rich Rodriguez. The video will be playing throughout the festival.

Other festival highlights will include a children's craft, open air market, food tasting and more.
