Chaplain joins GreenFields of Geneva

Bruce Main is primed for the challenge of serving as the first chaplain at GreenFields of Geneva. "Two years, the age of GreenFields, is new. It is a pleasure and an honor to have the opportunity to initiate spiritual care on campus," he said.

Main came to GreenFields earlier this summer with more than 35 years of experience in spiritual work in Texas and Illinois. For many years Main served as a senior church pastor. "I decided I wanted to pursue something different and yet not different," he said. "I loved church ministry but wanted to serve in a different role where I could touch the lives of seniors." Main subsequently worked in a hospice setting before moving to continuing care retirement communities. "I love older folks and their families and was interested in pastoring and ministering to the needs of residents and their families, and providing spiritual care for them," he said,

Main has found a perfect fit at GreenFields. "I love listening to the stories of seniors. There's so much that we can learn from their stories…where they've been, what they've experienced, the good, the bad, the difficult and the easy. I really enjoy hearing about what has shaped their lives," he said.

Main's favorite activity is visiting residents either in their apartments or in the hospital. "I often make planned visits. Residents frequently seek me out with questions or comments. Additionally, the nursing staff and social workers communicate spiritual or emotional needs of residents who I will visit," he said.

Main also likes to make unplanned visits, stopping to chat with residents and their family member that he encounters.

"Bruce has connected with the residents on so many levels," said Judi Donovan, executive director of GreenFields. "His visits with them are really treasured. He's their friend and confidant and helps them navigate their way through what may be challenging transitions and events. He's very kind and they appreciate his wisdom and experience."

Main has also been involved in supporting GreenFields' spiritual life committee, which is comprised of residents. "We've created a very ecumenical spirit that Bruce supports while respecting all faith traditions," said Donovan. "He is launching a choir for holiday services, has started Bible study, a weekly chapel service and works on a number of committees."

Main is impressed with the camaraderie at the community. "There's excellent communication among the employees. It's very upbeat. And the residents are happy people. They've developed deep friendships and have learned to depend on one another and share with each other," he said.

"Bruce is a tremendous resource at GreenFields. His work is an extension of the values of our organization, to carry out our mission of friendship, and creating a home that is supportive and caring," said Donovan.
