Palatine Township collects Thanksgiving basket donations
Palatine Township is collecting donations from area residents for the 2013 Thanksgiving program to help under-resourced families throughout the township enjoy a holiday dinner on Thanksgiving.
“Every family should be able to enjoy a holiday dinner on Thanksgiving,” said Sharon Langlotz-Johnson, township supervisor. “If you would like to help a local family, please call us at (847) 358-6700 or sign up online at palatinetownship.com by Nov. 15, so we will know how many families we will be able to help. We ask that we receive your basket at the township offices at 721 S. Quentin Road in Palatine by Nov. 20, so we can distribute them on Nov. 22.”
Basket items should include all the food items needed to create a Thanksgiving dinner less the turkey. Suggested items for the dinner include a large box of instant mashed potatoes, two cans of turkey gravy, one bag of stuffing mix, a can of cranberry sauce, two cans of green beans, a can of mushroom soup, two cans of chicken broth, a can of fried onions, two cans of corn and one large can of sweet potatoes.
For the dessert portion of the basket, items can include two boxes of Jell-O, two cans of fruit, one can of evaporated milk, one box of pie crust mix, a can of pie filling, one box of dessert mix and to help with the preparation of the meal, a roll of tin foil. Other optional items can include coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
The township asks that the baskets only contain nonperishable food and no turkeys. A $25 grocery gift card is suggested, but not required. The gift card enables families to purchase a turkey and other perishable items for their meal.
“Feel free to add a card, note or other nonperishable items to the basket,” said Langlotz-Johnson. “A large laundry basket works great to package your donation.”
Palatine Township covers a six-mile by six-mile area south of Lake-Cook Road in Palatine, north of Central Avenue in Schaumburg, east of Huntington Boulevard in Hoffman Estates and west of Wilke Road in Arlington Heights. The township holds its monthly board meeting on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Palatine Township offices on Quentin Road in Palatine.
