Peace Day at Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School -AEHI

Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School-AEHI (AGBMS-AEHI) students, teachers and community members celebrated the life and work of Maria Montessori, founder of the Montessori Method and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, on September 20 in observation of International Peace Day.

Montessori was nominated for the peace prize for her “Peace in Education Curriculum” in 1948, and today Montessori schools all over the world recognize her achievements on International Peace Day.

AGBMS-AEHI Students commemorated the day by making pinwheels as part of the “Pinwheels for Peace” project, an art installation project that began in 2005 as an outlet for students across the country to express their feelings about world events and the need for peace.

Students decorated each pinwheel with pictures and words of peace. Students also sung “Light a Candle for Peace,” lit a peace candle and recited the peace pledge, and passed out roses during a ceremony that was attended by Wheeling Chief of Police William Benson, Wheeling Fire Chief Keith MacIsaac, and numerous parents and community members.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the children planted each pinwheel outside on the Peace Sign for passersby and other visitors to observe.

Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School-AEHI is a classic Montessori school in Wheeling, Ill., serving children 15 months through 12 years of age including children who are deaf or hard of hearing. For additional information about the program, visit www.agbms.org or call 847-850-5490.
