“Shears to You” -- A Unique Haircutting Service for the Homebound

Frank Patten Jr. is a local (Northwestern suburban) hairdresser – and a member of Cosmetologists Chicago*– who dedicated to helping under-served populations. So, it is not surprising that he would open “Shears to You”, a newly founded hairdressing business that offers on-site beauty services to developmentally delayed adults, youth held in confined facilities, and maturing adults with limited mobility. (*an association of licensed salon professionals, which also owns and produced America’s Beauty Show)

In business for a little over a year, Frank, works with residents of Clearbrook home for the disabled, Little City Foundation, St. Coletta Home in Wisconsin and other facilities around the northwest suburbs.

At an early age, Frank was a caregiver for an Aunt, who became a paraplegic because of an auto accident. During these same early years, Frank Patten loved hair-cutting and eventually became a licensed salon professional. “I cut my own hair and I cut the hair of all my friends, I was very popular in the neighborhood!” comments the jovial hairdresser.

Through the years, he also worked in a variety of residential homes … and with troubled youth confined to state facilities; he noticed they all needed haircuts! About five years ago, Frank began developing the idea of combining two of his passions: cutting hair and helping people. Helping people within their own place of comfort was important. He had to convince the government agencies of the need for a beauty service … he finally was able to show that looking good helps one to feel good! “Shears to You” was born … it is the only business in Illinois providing such services.

“I live for the moments when a developmentally challenged female looks at herself in the mirror after her haircut, smiles, and says, ‘I’m pretty!’ I have one client who calls me his ‘favorite barber’ - - those comments make me feel good!”

Through “Shears to You,” Frank Patten, Jr. services about 150 clients per month … who pay $11-$25 for a cut and style. For more information, call 847.636.8676 or frank@shearstoyoullc.com. ###
