Grayslake D46 to consider cutting teachers at meeting

Grayslake Elementary District 46 board members at a meeting today expect to vote on a proposed package of cuts that would include teacher layoffs.

District 46 officials have been discussing ways to shrink a $1.8 million deficit projected for the 2013-14 academic year budget. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at Prairieview School, 103 E. Belvidere Road, Hainesville.

Part of the budget reduction the board is expected to vote on is the elimination of about 15 teachers to save $725,000.

Under the preliminary plan, average class sizes would rise with fewer instructors. Average class sizes would be 25 students in kindergarten through second grade and up to 30 pupils in grades 3 through 8.

Superintendent Ellen Correll has said the teacher cuts would be decided through evaluation ratings and districtwide seniority. She said board members need to decide on the cuts by the end of this month because she wants to give direction to district employees before spring break.

Other measures on the table include reducing the superintendent’s budget by $5,000 and slicing technology spending by $50,000.
