Suburban nominees winless at Oscars

Although several suburban talents were nominated for Oscars at Sunday night’s 85th annual Academy Awards, none of them took home the big prize.

Gary Rydstrom from Elmhurst was part of a team nominated for Achievement in Sound Mixing on Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” but “Les Misérables” took home the top award in that category.

Brothers Colin and Greg Strause of Waukegan both worked as visual effects supervisors on “The Avengers,” which was up against Carol Stream native Andy Arnett’s team from “Snow White and the Huntsman” in the Achievement Visual Effects category, but a team from “Life of Pi” won that award.

Arnett predicted the outcome to Daily Herald Film Critic Dann Gire last week.

“It won’t win,” Arnett said of “Snow White.” “But ‘Life of Pi’ will, and that’s OK.”
