WW South takes care of business

There was no letdown and there was no looking ahead.

As Wheaton Warrenville South has done throughout the DuPage Valley Conference season, the Tigers were thorough and consistent during their 59-40 victory at Naperville North on Tuesday night.

“We had to take care of business,” Tigers coach Rob Kroehnke said. “We’re at the point of the season where what you did yesterday … you have to back it up today. We had a great win on Saturday against Hillcrest and it really meant nothing if we didn’t back it up. This doesn’t mean anything unless we back it up on Thursday night.”

WW South, which has a key DVC showdown with Naperville Central on Thursday, led the Huskies from the opening tip thanks to junior Meghan Waldron’s 25-point and 10-rebound effort.

The Tigers held a 32-19 edge at halftime, but Naperville North quickly closed to within 34-25 in the early stages of the third quarter. Kroehnke called timeout and WW South responded with a 16-4 run to close the quarter, which essentially put the game away.

“(When they called timeout) I thought we were making our run,” Naperville North coach Jacquie Discipio said. “I thought we were back and we were ready to go and then — we showed that we weren’t mentally prepared for this game as we weren’t able to respond.”

The Tigers (19-3, 9-0) simply overwhelmed the Huskies (9-12, 2-7) with their size, speed and strength during the decisive run.

“I think that is something that defines us,” Waldron said. “No matter what the score is we’re never satisfied. We are definitely looking to score.”

Discipio’s squad also lost a 57-20 decision when the two schools met in early December.

“They are the kind of team that we want to be,” Discipio said. “They either get a stop on defense or they score. There is no between with them. They are relentless. They do all the small things right. They play as a team. They are well-coached. WW South does it right. I think we were not able to respond to that tonight.”

Sierra Bisso joined Waldron in double figures with 10 points. Allie Zappia chipped in 9 points for the Tigers.

Naperville North senior Zoe Swift paced the Huskies with 10 points, and teammate Laurel Pereira added 9 points.
