St. Mary 2nd-grader wins dream ride on fire truck

In this day and age of computers, international space stations and 3D computer imaging you don't really hear many little boys saying they want to be cowboys, mailmen or even firemen. But for Kiernan Deer, a second-grader at Saint Mary School in Buffalo Grove being a fireman and riding on a fire truck is his dream. He already has a pet dog, that is of course a Dalmatian, and he has a replica fire coat & hat. But he got closer to his dream the day he rode on a Buffalo Grove fire truck.

Now you can't just walk into a fire station and ask to have a ride. The Buffalo Grove fire station that is just around the corner of Saint Mary School donated a ride on a fire truck to the Saint Mary School annual fundraiser Jingle Jubilee. The fire truck was made part of the silent auction. So the little boy's parents won it at auction – big deal.

Well it wasn't so easy. You see the night of the fundraiser little Kiernan got sick and was running a high fever. His parents of course stayed home to take care of him. Luckily for Kiernan the assistant to the principal Mrs. Tomassetti knew how much Kiernan wanted that ride on the fire truck.

Now if someone is not able to attend the fundraiser and they want to bid on items at the fundraiser there is a process where you can bid absentee, but of course the Deers were planning on attending so they did not fill out the paper work – which needed to be completed a week before the event. Luckily, when Mrs. Tomassetti became aware the Deers were not at the fundraiser she called Kiernan's mom. She knew how much Kiernan and his family wanted the fire truck ride. She worked quickly to get the absentee forms in place and she helped Kiernan's mom bid on the fire truck ride.

You see, that is just one small benefit of going to a small school where even little dreams like riding a fire truck can come true. At Saint Mary, the teachers and the staff all know the children. They know there likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. And yes, they know their dreams.

Kiernan, not only got his ride on the fire truck but he shared it with his entire second grade class. After the ride Kiernan said “This is the awesomest day ever!"
