Peters graduated in 2012 from Elk Grove High School, where she was listed as an ensemble member in the spring 2012 musical, "Godspell," and participated in speech.

"Our hearts go out to Shannon and her family at this most difficult time," said Robert Gervasi, president of Quincy University, in a statement.

"We will continue to keep them foremost in our prayers."

A Facebook page has been set up in support of Peters and for coordinating fundraising for the family to help with her medical bills. The page had more than 400 likes as of Wednesday morning.
