Cancer study looking for more volunteers

Volunteers in the suburbs can sign up for a nationwide cancer prevention study at various events this week at locations in the Northwest suburbs.

The American Cancer Society is looking for 300,000 participants across the U.S. in a study that will follow their lives and health over the next 20-30 years, said Elizabeth Jablonski, director of research, health initiatives and advocacy in Illinois.

Researchers will take a small blood sample from all participants to try to see how genetics plays into cancer risk, in addition to looking at lifestyle factors, she said. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are eligible.

"This is somebody's opportunity to be a part of the next treatment, the next prevention and hopefully the next cures for cancer. This is something you can do that means a lot," she said.

Walk-ins are welcome or people can sign up at www.cps3northwestcommunity.com for an appointment at one of the following times and locations: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Northwest Community Hospital, South Pavillion, 800 W. Central Road, Arlington Heights; 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at St. Alexius Doctor Building 3, Suite 1400, 1555 Barrington Road, Hoffman Estates; 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at NCH Health Center Immediate Care, 199 W. Rand Road, Mount Prospect; and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Buehler YMCA, 1400 W. Northwest Highway, Palatine.
