Palatine Public Library District updates mission statement

For the first time since 1996, the Palatine Public Library District has a new Mission Statement. As patron and staff comments have contributed to expanded and enriched library experiences, the library has evolved in recent years through building renovations, service updates, and technology improvements. The Board of Library Trustees and staff recognized that the original mission statement no longer fully represented the current goals and objectives of the organization.

A team of trustees and staff identified the library’s core principles and compared them to the mission statements of many local and nationally-known libraries. The committee carefully chose wording that would at once convey what the library means to its patrons, and concisely represent how the staff and trustees see the library serving its resident community.

“We wanted the mission statement to reflect the ways our patrons actually use the library and to reinforce the inherent value the Library provides to both individual residents and to the service area as a whole,” said assistant director Anthony Auston.

After months of discussion and review, the committee presented a revised mission statement which the board unanimously approved at its August meeting.

Board vice president and committee chairwoman Barbara Illian stated, “The trend is for short and eye-catching mission statements that are clear and easy to understand. Our committee crafted language that concisely captures the essence of our library now and for years to come. We are pleased to introduce the new mission statement via our website and various library publications.”
