The Palatine Township building at 721 S. Quentin Road and an attached day care center was briefly evacuated Thursday morning when a meeting room filled with "a small amount of smoke," Palatine Fire Capt. Jim Conn said.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., a furnace was turned on for the first time this season and started smoking, possibly due to a dirty filter. Conn said that because the fire alarm activated, a few dozen people stood outside for less than 30 minutes as crews worked.

The township and day care were operating normally by about 9 a.m., Conn said.
