Sophomore quarterback Willie Bourban answered the question about whether he had enough experience to be a varsity quarterback for a perennial state power.

He threw 3 touchdowns to lead host Stevenson past Lyons 35-28 in a nonconference season opener Friday night.

Down 21-14 at halftime, the Patriots exploded for 21 unanswered points.

Bourban completed 19 of 24 passes for 145 yards on the night.

"I feel great that we were able to beat a great football team," Bourban said. "Hopefully we will be able to continue the rest of the season."

Lyons' Zachery Mahoney threw a 47-yard pass to Jemari Burks to give the Lions a 7-0 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

The two teams duked it out the rest of the half, with Lyons leading 21-14.

But Bourban and his teammates then took over. He threw a 22-yard pass to Matt Morrissey. Danny Nowak's 4-yard TD run gave Stevenson a 28-21 lead, and then Ryan Mass capped the 3-TD run with a 2-yard score.

"We beat a great football team tonight," Patriots coach Bill McNamara said.
