Kane 4-H Foundation announces scholarship winners

The Kane County 4-H Foundation recently selected its scholarship recipients for 2012.

This year, there was $3,500 in scholarship money available to local 4-H members. High school seniors along with post-high school students enrolled as a full-time student in an educational program were encouraged to apply.

Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of 4-H involvement, 4-H achievements, community service, school involvement and future plans in 4-H.

Winners of the educational scholarships included: Tyler Fabrizius of Maple Park, $750; Michael Long of Big Rock, $500; Veronica Riva of St. Charles, $1,000; and Larisa Sica of Campton Hills, $750.

One winner was selected for the Bob Konen Memorial Scholarship. Tyler Ott of Big Rock was the recipient of this $500 scholarship.

Tyler Fabrizius is a 10-year member and will be attending University of Wisconsin-Platteville this fall. At UW-Plateville he will be studying agribusiness for a future career in agriculture. Tyler hopes to work on the research and development side of farm equipment.

Michael Long is a 10-year 4-H member and will be attending University of Wisconsin-Platteville this fall. At UW-Platteville he will be studying for a future career in production agriculture. After college, Michael wants to come home and work on the family farm.

Veronica Riva is a 10-year 4-H member and will be attending Elgin Community College this fall. At ECC, her studies will include general courses for transfer to a four-year college. Veronica wants to pursue a career in education, where she hopes to become an educator in early childhood.

Larisa Sica is a 10-year 4-H member and will be attending Kansas State University this fall. At Kansas, she will be studying animal science with a pre-veterinary medicine focus. After obtaining her education, she hopes to become a large animal veterinarian focusing on equine medicine.

Tyler Ott is a 10-year 4-H member and will be attending Waubonsee Community College this fall. At Waubonsee, his studies will include general courses for transfer to a four-year college. Tyler wants to pursue a career in computer science.

Monies for these scholarships are made available through fundraising efforts and private donations to the Kane County 4-H Foundation. The Bob Konen Memorial Scholarship was first available in 2010 and is made possible through memorial donations from family and friends. Konen was a 50-year supporter serving as a member, club leader, and a volunteer.

Donations and money raised by the Kane County 4-H Foundation support many countywide events and activities, including volunteer support, training, and recognition; government day; fair activities and fair awards; clean barn awards; educational scholarships; and general 4-H/Extension office support.

4-H is part of University of Illinois Extension. It is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.
