Two charged with metal theft from Lake Villa railroad tracks

Two suspects have been charged with stealing metal from the Canadian National railroad tracks near the Lake Villa Metra station, according to police.

A train engineer who was stopping his train in the area saw a man and woman stealing metal plates from the railroad property and driving away in a white pickup truck Friday afternoon, police said.

Officers responding to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. thought the two might have been scrappers and called the nearest recycling center, Clearview Recycling in Hainesville, according to police.

During the call, officers learned the thieves were at the recycling center and were attempting to sell the stolen metal plates, police said.

Police responded to the recycling center and spotted the pair’s vehicle heading west on Route 120.

Police pulled the vehicle over and arrested John J. Anderson, 24, of McHenry and Kimberly A. Jeffer, 23, of Ingleside. They’re charged with theft and trespass to railroad right of way.

They are due in court Aug. 24.
