Local labor disputes to be discussed in Batavia

Submitted by Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice

Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice will present “Middle Class Under Fire” from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

They will be discussing the labor disputes that are happening in Northern Illinois.

They will be inviting speakers who will report on the struggle faced by the U.S. postal workers, the fight at the Joliet Caterpillar plant, the ongoing battle over cuts to pensions of teachers and other public sector workers, and the possible off-shoring of jobs to China from the Sensata plant in Freeport.

They will contrast this with one story with a more favorable outcome for local laborers: The ATMI workers in Aurora now have a more agreeable contract.

They will discuss why workers, in both the public and private sectors, unionized and non-unionized, are being pressured to give up pay, benefits and rights. Meanwhile, middle-class communities are suffering from unemployment and home foreclosures.

They will discuss how to support each other and fight back. They invite all interested parties to attend and help organize an effective response. For details, call Mary Shesgreen for Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice at (847) 742-6602.
