Mobile homes destroyed in Antioch area fire

Fire destroyed at least three mobile homes and seriously damaged a fourth Tuesday at an Antioch Township trailer park serving mostly temporary residents who stay there on weekends while boating on the adjacent Chain O’ Lakes.

Firefighters battled high winds to put out the fires, which occurred at the Grass Lake Landing, in the 26000 block of West Heart O’ Lakes Boulevard.

Lt. Chris Lienhardt of the Antioch Fire Protection District said the fire broke out at about 11:40 a.m. at the small trailer park. Flames were largely extinguished within about 45 minutes. Some small propane tanks exploded during the blaze due to the heat from the fire.

“We have no reports of injuries at this point, but the winds are making it tough to knock the fire down,” Leinhardt said Tuesday as firefighters battled the blaze.

Additional fire departments on the scene included Fox Lake, Lake Villa and Gurnee. Fire Chief John Nixon said firefighters left the scene at 2:20 p.m.

At this point, it is unclear what sparked the blaze, Leinhardt said. Nixon added that the department does not believe the cause to be suspicious.
