Incoming Stevenson freshmen to take required exams
Current eighth-grade students who will be attending Stevenson High School this fall will take required benchmark exams in English, mathematics and Spanish in January.
Students at Aptakisic, Daniel Wright, Fremont, St. Mary's, Twin Groves, West Oak and Woodlawn will be tested at their schools. English and mathematics testing will take place during the week of Jan. 9, and those taking Spanish will be tested the following week.
Benchmark exams for students at Solomon Schechter will take place on Friday, Jan. 13.
Students who miss an exam due to absence, as well as Stevenson-bound students from other public, private, and religious schools, will take all necessary exams at the high school on Saturday, Jan. 21. The mathematics exam begins at 8 a.m., the English exam starts at 9 a.m., and World Language exams will be offered at 11 a.m. Students will have a short break between the English and World Language exams. Testing should end by 12:30 p.m.
Students should plan to arrive by 7:45 a.m. and park in lot B. Enter the West Building through the Forum entrance. Signs will direct students to the testing area.
Benchmark examination results and successful completion of junior high school courses determine students' placement in freshmen-level courses at Stevenson next fall. Course placements will be mailed home in early February, before students meet with Stevenson counselors to register for classes.
All students will need to bring No. 2 pencils to the tests. Calculators are allowed on portions of the mathematics exam. Students should bring reading materials in case they finish their tests early.
For more information on the benchmark examinations, contact your junior high school principal or Monika Kiefer in the Teaching and Learning office at Stevenson (847) 415-4200.
