Conservancy groups offers native tree, shrub sale

Citizens for Conservation is accepting orders for its annual fall native tree and shrub sale.

Autumn is an ideal time to plant trees. Cool weather allows them to establish roots in their new locations before spring rains and summer heat stimulate top growth. Choose from 30 different shrubs and nearly 40 species of trees in various sizes.

Native trees and shrubs are disease and pest-resistant, adapted to our soils and tolerant of our extreme weather conditions. Help maintain the character of Barrington by planting an oak tree; CFC has nine species from which you can choose. Native flowering trees rival any exotic hybrids sold at the nurseries while greatly improving the health of the environment. There is a shrub for every niche, habitat and planting scenario. If you have a place, there is a shrub for it.

Download the order form from the CFC website, www.CitizensforConservation.org, or call (847)-382-7283, to have one mailed to you. Orders should be placed no later than Tuesday, Sept. 6, and can be picked up between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. While picking up your plant order, spend some time enjoying the displays and shopping with vendors at CFC's Green Fair, held in conjunction with the plant sale. Displays include the rescued raptors from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. CFC will have specialists in native landscaping, including rain gardens, to talk with you, and you can learn about caring for your lawn the natural way with Safer Pest Control Projects.Spend time browsing through beautiful, slightly loved nature books, and consider a CFC T-shirt or calendar.
