Optimist Club hosts youth golf outing at Lake Park

Thirty-one golfers ages 9-16 hit the Lake Park links on Wednesday, Aug. 10, for the eighth Annual Des Plaines Optimist Club Youth Golf Outing.

The free event began with a 10 a.m. shotgun start and each player received a sleeve of new golf balls and a package of tees. Play continued on the par 3, 18-hole course, and concluded with a hot dog lunch.

On holes 5 (80 yards) and 15 (76 yards), the Optimists set up a Closest to the Pin Contest. Ryan Cooch came closest to the pin on hole 15 and Kevin Haltman came within five feet of the pin on 15. The two winners will each receive a trophy and all of the golfers will receive a participation medal from the Optimist Club.

The Des Plaines Optimist Club raises money for youth activities through their sales of Christmas trees during the month of December. Their mission is to sponsor fun, educational activities and outings and have been doing so since 1919. This past summer The Des Plaines Optimists also hosted a Fishing Derby and Friday Night Movies at the Lake.

The next event at Lake Park will be Fall Fest, September 16-18, a three-day, family-friendly festival including live entertainment, carnival rides, booths and games, food and drink, a car show, baggo, a country fair tent and a fishing derby.
