Credit union sponsor offers scholarships

Consumers Cooperative Association, the sponsor of Consumers Credit Union, is offering six scholarships to local high school seniors who are on pace to graduate in 2012.

There is still time for interested students to apply for one of the available scholarships, as the deadline is the end of the calendar year.

“Consumers Cooperative Association’s scholarship program promotes educational excellence and success in the local community, as well as recognizing and supporting the academic achievement of tomorrow’s leaders,” noted CCU President Sean Rathjen.

“The credit union and its members appreciate the leadership and dedication demonstrated by Consumers Cooperative Association and is proud to support their efforts to celebrate the accomplishments of our community’s youth.”

Applications are available at area high schools, at all six Consumers Credit Union locations and online at www.myconsumers.org. Valid applications must include the student’s official high school transcript through their junior year, along with a copy of their first semester grades from the current academic year. All applications must be received by Dec. 31, 2011.

Applicants will be evaluated in the following categories: academic performance, financial need and leadership abilities, including community involvement.

High school students scheduled to graduate in spring 2012 are eligible to apply for one of the $1,500 scholarships, providing the applicant or parent/guardian has been a member of Consumers Credit Union for a minimum of one year.

Applicants must complete an application and submit a nonreturnable photo. Those students awarded scholarships will be featured in an upcoming issue of CCU’s newsletter, The Reporter, and will be recognized at the credit union’s annual meeting March 14, 2012.

“Educational opportunities are among the most valuable services we can offer for the credit union and its members,” noted Liz Oldham, Consumers Cooperative Association president. “After all, today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders ... and it is our responsibility to actively support higher education for our youth.”
