Brunch with Books celebrates reading

On May 11 and 12, the Des Plaines Park District Creative Corners Terrific 3’s preschool class invited parents, grandparents, and friends to the fifth annual Brunch with Books.

Preschool Director Heidi Szalajka checked out 105 books from the Des Plaines Public Library for the two-day celebration of reading. Choices included stories of old friends, like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Eloise, the little girl who lives in the Plaza Hotel; new classics like Officer Buckle and Fancy Nancy; and a collection of Pop-Up, I Spy, and picture books.

“Reading is the foundation of education,” said Szalajka. “The park district is committed to literacy, and fostering the love of books through story time, is a big part of our program. At Brunch with Books, children learn by example how important books truly are.”

Registration is in progress for the 2011/2012 Creative Corners school year. Terrific 3’s meet twice a week from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and Fantastic 4’s and 5’s also meet twice a week, from 9 a.m. to noon. Options to add Fridays and an Afternoon Enrichment Class, from noon to 2 p.m., help to gently prepare children for elementary school.

Four Early Childhood classes are available this summer, as well. Details and descriptions are available online at DPParks.org, in the Summer Spectrum available at Prairie Lakes and the Leisure Center, or by calling (847) 391-5700.
